According to reports, Arsenal have said they are willing to take David Bentley back from Norwich. Norwich need to get rid of the injured player in order to be able to get another player into their squad on loan. We had thought this a bit cheeky, since they had agreed to take him and pay his wages for a year and it'd be a bit much to expect Arsenal to take that financial burden back without the benefit of being able to play Bentley. But it seems that Norwich may have to pay his wages anyway. Norwich are said to still be undecided though, they're going to take a week to assess Bentley's injury. But one has to presume that they'll only keep him on if they think they're going to get a good few games out of him at the end of the season. Perhaps they'll be spending more of that time working out who else they'd be able to bring in.
This appears to be confirmed by Wenger's statement, "He will certainly come back for treatment but I don't cancel the loan as I feel they have taken the player for one year. We can't take back every player if he gets injured. It is impossible for us to do that as we give a player for free on a one-year loan."
Last year, Arsenal refused to take Franny Jeffers back from Everton after he fell out with David Moyes while on a year long loan there.
It's all a very big shame for Bentley himself of course. He was doing alright with the Canaries, but if he doesn't play again this season then he'll probably be starting next season back at square one regarding getting into the Arsenal team.
