Hmmm, having just suggested that talk of Robert Pires leaving has been premature, today's quotes from the player himself do make you wonder if his
remaining years at the club mightn't be counted on the fingers of one finger.
He is reported in the Standard as saying that he's playing for Arsenal this season, but that nothing new is going to happen contract-wise until January at the earliest. This could easily lead one to
believe previous suggestions that he's not happy with the one-year extension he's been offered. Having said that, it is noteworthy that he chose to compare his situation with that of Dennis Bergkamp, who has been renewing from year to year for a while now. While Arsenal do seem to have a policy of not securing players on longer-term contracts once they hit 30, Bergkamp's
example shows that this does not necessarily equate to letting them leave. But even at the age of 32, we'd like to think that
if Bobby's first few months of this season are anything like his last 2 seasons, Wenger will pull out the stops to extend his contract in January rather than let him leave on a free. |
