As feared, Tony Adams has had to have a hernia operation,
and will be out for the next 7 or 8 weeks. Amongst other matches,
he misses the Charity Shield, another match with Man Utd in the
league, and England's 2 crucial Euro-qualifiers in September.

Soccernet speculate that we may have to spend to overcome
the centre-back shortfall (and that 16 year old Jermaine Pennant
will be drafted into the first-team and get Worthington Cup
starts
this season).
