According to The Mirror, FA Cup hero and Ukrainian national icon Oleg Luzhny is having talks with Charlton Athletic over a possible move.
Luzhny is now out of contract, and the Mirror say he was unlikely
to be offered a new deal as Arsenal are said to be looking to cut their wage bill. If that's true, it'll be interesting to see where we go for cover at right-back. Perhaps Kolo Toure or another youngster is in Wenger's mind as Lauren's deputy.
Luzhny has just had by far his best season for Arsenal. He filled in very well for Lauren earlier in the season (so well that some were calling for him to retain his place when the Cameroonian was available again), and put in his best central defensive performance for us in the Cup Final on Saturday. So if he does leave, it'll be on a high note.
Meanwhile today's Standard says that Dennis Bergkamp is hoping for another year's extension to his Arsenal contract. He's not ready to quit playing, but if Arsenal don't want to keep him on he may end up doing that. "Would I move to another club? I don't think so. You want to play at a high level and I think I have that chance at Arsenal. There is not much higher than Arsenal and, if there is, they probably won't buy me."
But they also report that our record signing Sylvain Wiltord has rejected a new deal. He has a year left on his current contract and is said to want a big pay rise. But he also continues to say that he loves the club and would like to stay, and Arsene Wenger has said that he wants to keep the squad together, so we'll take this report with a pinch of salt for now.
Sorry for the recent hiatus. Holidays and work, you know the score. We will be starting up the summer rumour mill very soon, and Arseweb will be back up to speed at the start of the new season.
