Arsenal's recent signings have lead to the squeezing out of 2 young strikers through the closing transfer window.
Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has joined Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee. The 19 year old Dutch U21 international made 23 first team appearances for the Gunners, most being in the League Cup, and scored 2 goals the last of which was against Doncaster in the 5th round of that competition this year.
He's good at what he does, running at the opposition down the
wings, but has looked a bit limited in his appearances this season and it's no surprise to see him leave.
Secondly, and less significantly, David Bentley has joined Blackburn Rovers. He's been there on loan this season, and the only surprise there is that the move wasn't permanent in the first place. He asked for a permanent move back in August, and Arsenal were said to have told him "yes" (it wasn't just me looking for a way to get "Bentley... let him have it" in a headline, honest!). Perhaps the loan deal was just because Rovers weren't sure about him. Whatever, he's done enough to impress them now.
21 year old Bentley made 8 first team appearances for Arsenal, again mostly in the League Cup. He'll be remembered best for a cracking goal against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup 4th round in January 2004. But he went to Norwich on loan for the whole of last season, and obviously got enough of a taste for regular action to prompt that transfer request.
We wish them luck, but doubt that either will be back to haunt us too badly. |
