Rosenberg striker John Carew is once again being linked
with Arsenal (eg Soccernet). Norwegian international Carew is one fo the hottest properties around,
having been described as a better prospect than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Tore Andre Flo and (by Gianluca Vialli) as
"the next superstar of football". He managed to score 5 champions league goals, despite playing for a side which managed a total of
1 point and 5 goals from 6 phase 2 matches.
Carew was the subject of an aborted bid by Borussia Dortmund, and
interest from PSV Eindhoven (whose striker Ruud van Nistelrooy we are also, of course, going to sign in the summer). Now Valencia
are said to be close to agreeing a deal (see Opta soccer)
which is probably why people are linking Arsenal again (ie before
it's too late). Either that or they watched him on telly last night, when he was one positive thing in Rosenberg's loss to Real Madrid.
As Jon said when the Arsenal-Carew link first came up in the Norwegian press,
Arsenal have watched most Rosenberg games for the last 4 years, without buying anyone from them. And probably the most telling
fact is that the quotes seem to be coming from (you guessed it)
Carew's agent.
Meanwhile, the Sun are suggesting that Arsenal are interested in
signing West Ham's Trevor Sinclair. (see Opta again, who coincidentally also made up some guff about
Frank Lampard jnr a few weeks back). They suggest that
Sinclair has ambitions to join a bigger club, and that
Davor Suker and Nigel Winterburn may be used in part exchange.
Once again the story is being used as corroboration for the
hacks' belief that Overmars is destined for Barcelona in the summer. Why do they insist that Arsenal only have room for
one winger in the squad?! Surely the trouble we've had on the
left when Marc's been out this season only confirms that we need
someone else as well as Overmars?
(NB today Overmars is reported (again) as saying that he has no wish to leave
Arsenal, he has 4 years remaining on his contract and wants to
see them out).
Incidentally, yesterday's Sun had an even stranger West Ham transfer rumour. Apparently Real Madrid offered Harry Redknapp a certain badly-behaved young French striker on loan. Apparently
Anelka really likes London now, although Real (who he
wasn't prepared to train for because they wouldn't change everything
to suit him) are
his dream club (maybe equal with Lazio) (and, err, Marseilles).
So look out for Anelka suggesting to the Spanish press that Real move to London. Harry wasn't interested.
Of course, the other possibility is that Real thought of it as a
punishment.
