Arseweb would like to point out that *we* wrote this story - and did our own translation from the French - hours before it was picked up by the Press Association's Martyn Ziegler, and hence every other Tom, Dick and Harry website out there. Thank you.
There's a fascinating difference in tone between the Emmanuel Petit interview (in the original language) published on Football365.fr, and the translation offered by the same people's English-language site.
If you believe what Danny Kelly's London mob draw from the piece, 'Petit has told Football365 that he is ready to quit Arsenal this summer to join one of Europe's glamour clubs... he has set his sights on a big-money move abroad.' Thankfully though, the French site has the interview in direct speech - and we can draw our own, rather more positive, conclusions.
"Anything is possible," Petit said. "I could well end my career at Arsenal. Staying isn't a problem, there are good and bad things about the club, same as anywhere.
"I want to be part of a club which fires the imagination, and you can count those on the fingers of one hand. And when I say that I include Arsenal, even though they might not be a 'mythical' club. There are 4 or 5 European clubs on a level above Arsenal (he goes on to list ManU, Bayern, Barca, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Juventus). To become a mythical club, Arsenal need to win more European trophies."
But he then goes on to say that if he leaves Highbury, it won't be for somewhere else in England - and he isn't attracted to Germany either. But he hasn't yet spoken to anybody.
First rule of sports journalism: never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
