According to the
official Atletico Mineiro site and
this Brasilian site, Brasil midfielder
Gilberto Silva is indeed on his way to Arsenal.
According to Atletico, the player has left for London today.
We can only hope that an announcement from Arsenal will follow
a medical in the next few days. They say the deal is worth $8million, with 80% going to the club.
Bloomberg quote the player's agent as saying that
terms will be discussed tomorrow, but he is optimistic. "Gilberto is very happy with the prospect of playing in England, He just needs to tie up a few things with the contract."
This signing would help to shore up Arsenal's midfield in the
early part of the season, with Pires, Ljungberg, and Gio all injured. His performances inb the World Cup suggest he'll be an able partner, and cover, for Patrick Vieira.
Many thanks to Paul Burland for the links.

Further confirmation comes from this Brasilian web site which says Silva met Arsenal, agreed a contract and will travel to Austria on Saturday to join the squad. Silva was quoted as saying:
"I was very impressed by the facilities that I have found here. I knew that
this was special, and it has surpassed my expectations. I am very happy
with this new stage in my life and will do all I can to reward those who
have put their belief in me."
Thanks to Julio Romo for the info
