There's a story doing the rounds, that Arsenal are considering a
move for ex Argentina keeper Carlos Roa.
Roa obviously has plenty of experience, and is currently
out of contract at Real Mallorca.
It does seem likely that the club will be trying to sign
another keeper before the transfer deadline in 10 days time, following the collapse of the Carini deal. But is Roa the answer?
Apparently Roa is a bit weird, and his off-pitch antics have
attracted the sort of attention which one would expect Arsenal
to shy away from (see Independent). He is a Seventh Day Adventist, which has lead to his refusing to play on Sundays, as well as predicting the end of the world last year
(a prophesy which failed to come true, in case you're wondering).
And on top of that there's his walking out on Mallorca and
saying he was quitting football to live on a farm.
A few people have emailed Arseweb asking why we need another
keeper, saying "doesn't Wenger rate Stuart Taylor after his
good showing last season?". Well, the fact that we needed Taylor
last season suggests that 2 keepers won't be enough. On top of that, we suspect that Wenger would prefer to have Taylor playing
for the reserves than sitting on the bench for the first team
on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, Wenger has hinted that Carini could be on his way to Man United. Other rumours regarding who Arsenal might be looking at include Marcos of Brasil, and our old mate Alex Manninger
(the story goes that Espanyol had a clause in the contract with Arsenal which means they can send him back if they don't like
him, and that they might use it. But the clause needs Manninger's say-so too).
Rupe adds...
According to Arsenal.com, Wenger has confirmed that Roa is one of the options he is looking at, but denied reports that a contract has already been offered. He says that 4 keepers have been trying out for us (anyone know the other 3?). It is also being reported that Roa has
assured Arsenal that he would play on Sundays.
Wenger says he won't make a decision till early next week.
