While there's still nothing official from Arsenal,
reports appear to confirm yesterday's prediction that Rami Shabaan is signing for Arsenal.
The UEFA website says that he has signed a 2 year deal. And
it appears to be a dream-come-true for the Swedish stopper.
"It's exactly the right club for me," he says, "I've been an Arsenal fan ever since I was a little kid, and when Limpar played there I began to follow them more closely, and now all of a sudden I will play there. It's amazing and I can't quite believe it."
Everyone seems to agree that Shabaan is Swedish, but TribalFootball go out on a limb (no change there) and say he's
Egyptian. Someone should tell the Sweden coach who is apparently
considering calling him up.
Shabaan has said he's happy to fight for a place at Highbury,
and being second choice at Arsenal has to be preferable to
having the same role at Djurgården.
Rupe adds...
Thanks to an anonymous reader for this BBC page which explains about the Egypt thing. Apparently Shabaan was born in Sweden to an Egyptian father and an English mother, and has yet to play international football. "My heart is in Egypt, but I am realistic. I am a Swedish too and honestly it would be better for me to represent the Swedish team." But the BBC took it upon themselves to contact the Egypt coach, who is apparently going to try to nab him asap. Looks like TribalFootball could turn out to be right for a change.
The BBC also confirm (from Shabaan) that the deal is still dependent on terms being agreed between the 2 clubs.
