Taylor recovery may bring end to keeper search by Rupe

Arsene Wenger has commented on the keeper search on the official website.

He admits he'd like to sign one, but the gist seems to be that we shouldn't necessarily expect anything to happen in the transfer window.

"I have two choices. I can go for an experienced goalkeeper for six months or a young keeper who will stay and fight for the position. At the moment I have not found either." and goes on to say "I don't expect someone knocking on my door with a jewel"

He also points out that there's little point signing someone now who is cup-tied in Europe, and that the longer the failure to find a suitable target goes on, the closer Stuart Taylor gets to recovery. Taylor and Shaaban are both suffering from broken bones, but Taylor's (finger) should be a lot quicker to mend than Shaaban's (both lower leg bones). Wenger says that Taylor should be training again in a week or so.

Wenger says we'll probably see a few names linked in the press in the coming days....

Latest ones are Angelo Peruzzi & Lionel Letizi (Lazio & PSG respectively) anjd Stefanos Kotsolis (Panathinaikos), anbd the superbly named Bulgarian Zdravko Zdravkov.

Leeds have allegedly responded to speculation about Paul Robinson by publicly stating that he'd cost Arsenal £12million (so we wonder what they'd do if the Gunenrs actually offered it, if the allegation is true of course!). They're also said to have said that Nigel Martyn would be £10million less.

Seems to me that most of the players linked so far would be cup-tied (although I don't know if Peruzzi, Lazio's number 2, has played in Europe this season).

Rupe adds...
Thanks to John Rodriguez for a couple more links from France...

"...we're being extensively linked with Mickaël Landreau of Nantes, who is not cup-tied in Europe (not after Nantes' horrible campaign last year). The interesting bit is that Micka has publicly said he'll leave Nantes at the end of his current contract (he'll be on a Bosman at the end of the year) and he's quite young (21, I think) despite having been the starting keeper for FCNA for four years (imagine captaining a Championship-winning side when you're 18 years old). "

"Also from France we're being linked with the Auxerre pair of Khalilou Fadiga (AJA have already announced he'll be leaving) and Olivier Kapo. TF1 have a decent list of all the French transfers, both confirmed and rumoured."
