A leaked 'lines to take' document prepared for an OnDigital press conference suggests that Champions League football may be coming to a satellite dish near you - but at a price.
IT news website The Register has reprinted the document to mock its plans for an Internet-enabled set-top box. But the references to a 'premium sports channel' caught Arseweb's attention.
OnDigital has the rights to a few mid-profile sporting competitions, such as ATP Tour Tennis, and Nationwide footie - plus, of course, the Champions League matches not involving Man Utd (generally).
'From the season starting in 2001 (CL footie) will be part of our premium sports channel,' it says - premium usually means 'at a price'. 'We will listen to offers from any platform which wants to carry the channel. But we have no obligation to sell the rights to anyone else.'
Good news for those who've already forked out for a Sky setup, perhaps. But it's worth remembering that OnDigital and Sky still can't even work out a deal to get mainstream ITV on to satellite. |
