ITV has revealed its plans for the future, as it aims to 'leapfrog' the BBC and Sky. And it could be good or bad news for those with an interest in the Champions League.
The OnDigital name is to disappear, to be rebranded as ITV Digital. And there will be an ITV Sport channel... which will be concentrating on Nationwide football (which it will have exclusively) and the Champions League.
'The new channel will combine live football with feature-led programming to give viewers the complete UEFA Champions League picture,' says an ITV press release - which sounds encouraging. Unless Barry Venison is involved.
But they seem to have put an end to hopes that the ITV Sport channel would also be available to the majority satellite-owning sector of the multi-channel TV market - namely, Sky.
There's certainly no mention of satellite carriage of the new service in the lengthy statement. And as we reported last July, they said they would 'listen to offers from any platform which wants to carry the channel - but we have no obligation to sell the rights to anyone else.' |
