An independent survey of Highbury residents conducted this
week has revealed a majority in favour of the proposed new stadium on the Ashburton Grove site, but possibly not as large
a majority as the club would have liked. 55.6% favour the move, with roughly half that number preferring that the club stayed at Highbury. If the questions asked were the same as those
on the online version (which can be seen, and filled in,
here), then one has to be careful when interpreting them.
Perhaps everyone who preferred the Highbury option would
be happy with Ashburton Grove if Highbury is proved/deemed impossible (and vice versa). Or perhaps some of those favouring
Highbury are Ashburton Grove resident Nimbys (and vice versa).
We suspect that, to date, groups opposed to AFC expansion/relocation and those that just want shot of us
completely so as to improve their property values, may have been more active in getting like-minded people to respond. So please do use this opportunity to have
your opinions recorded (whatever they are!). See
this item and others in
this topic for ArseWeb's
coverage of the story including map. Seems to us that Ashburton Grove would disrupt relatively few residents, and keeping
Arsenal in the Highbury area would be a great result.
See also this Islington Express page which discusses the results, with comments from interested parties including the club (and
there's more on this page).
It includes scaremongering quotes from daft people opposed to Arsenal's expansion. "This area could not cope with an extra 22,000 fans" says one, conveniently forgetting that the area
used to cope fine before the Taylor report and that those people
would only be at the ground occasionally, and ignoring the
positive things that development would bring to the area. And there's
a quote from one Nick Robinson suggesting that residents in
favour of Arsenal's expansion don't realise what it means.
Nick is the chairman of BRAG,
an Anti Ashburton Grove residents group. Someone please correct us if
we're wrong, but isn't this the same Nick Robinson who is
a Radio 5 presenter and dedicated Manchester United fan?
Nimbyism is one (bad) thing, but could there be other motives
operating here....?
Also worth a look is the paper's letters page, featuring many (self-)interested parties,
including Mr Robinson, and another who appears to have swallowed the
Dome story.
