The Islington Stadium Communities Alliance
have organised a public meeting about the proposed
new Arsenal Stadium, to be held on today, Wednesday 2nd Feb
at 7:30pm, in the Queensland multi media arts centre
(26-38 Queensland Road, N7).
Although we might sometimes take the piss, it is very
important that Arsenal fans, who according to the feedback we get are overwhelmingly in favour of the restoration of capacity,
take the views of concerned residents seriously. Although
they sometimes go over the top in their public reactions,
there is no question that the Ashburton Grove development,
or the further development of the current Arsenal Stadium site,
would have an impact on local communities. It is likely,
for example, that the Queensland arts centre itself would
disappear if the Ashburton Grove plan goes through
(see this map).
However it seems to me that Arsenal Football Club is
an essential part of the community in that area, and that
keeping it there is inevitably going to cause problems for some
people. Although it may be small consolation for
those people, in the community as a whole their problems will be offset by the good things
that the development will bring in terms of jobs, facilities,
more tickets for locals currently priced out of Highbury,
and the continued tradition of inner city football and local
pride in Arsenal Football Club. As far as the "impact" of the
"extra" visitors to the area is concerned, AFC are
committed to minimising the impact in terms of sheer numbers
of people, and to this end we anticipate plans to develop routes from Drayton Park, Arsenal Tube, and Holloway Road. Plus there's
the fact that hooliganism and matchday violence is very low
these days. I think some of these residents are still living in the 1970s!
Unfortunately I am unable to attend myself, due to previous
commitments. But it would make a difference if interested Gooners
could go along. If you do, please do not make a nuisance of yourself but listen to what the residents associations etc have to say, and if you feel moved to contribute please do so
in a reasoned and considerate manner ("as if Arsenal fans would do anything else!" I hear you say...).
And if any Arsenal fans out there are able to send me a report on the meeting
(to Rupe@arseweb.com)
please do, and I'll collate whatever I get just as soon as I
can. Please note that this is a web site for Arsenal fans,
all Arsenal fans, and I'd be particularly interested
to hear from Gooners who are against the development.
