According to today's Evening Standard, London Mayor Ken Livingstone is going to be announcing his support for
Arsenal's Ashburton Grove stadium plans this week, possibly tomorrow.
Livingstone's approval has been expected. He had previously said
that the plans had his general backing, but needed a few changes. Between then and submitting their final proposals to Islington Council, Arsenal introduced some major revisions in answer to the points raised by Livingstone (as well as concerned local residents).
Kern himself has not commented since then. But "sources close to him" are quoted by the Standard as saying, "He had reservations about the original application, but thinks the revised version is fine. He thinks this is an ideal way of retaining the stadium in the local area."
See This Is London for full Standard story.
Assuming they're right, there is only one hope left for the
anti-Ashburton campaigners. They will be pressing Stephen Byers to call for a public inquiry. But it seems unlikely that he'll do so if/when Ken's full support is added to the overwhelming vote in favour by the council.
