Arsenal (1) 2 - 1 (0) Coventry City
Highbury, Saturday 16th September 2000
FA Carling Premiership
Once again Arsenal dominated the game. For 80 minutes it
was played almost exclusively in City's half. But in the
end it was the all-too-common story of desperation at the
end. We hung on thanks to the woodwork, and won thanks to
two players' first goals for the club.
Wiltord started the game and put us ahead after 24 minutes,
but it wasn't till the 72nd that alleged Ipswich target Paolo Vernazza turned in fellow sub Thierry Henry's cross to give us a
cushion.
And we needed it. City pulled one back through Mustapha Hadji
(who says he's glad Arsenal's alleged summer bid for him was unsuccesful) with 10 minutes to go. Coventry attacked for the rest of the game, and in stoppage time Marcus Hall's shot
beat Seaman but came out off the underside of the bar.
It's now 8 years since Coventry last won at Highbury. Not yet adequate punishment for that first-day embarassment, though.
