Derby County (0) 0 - 2 (1) Arsenal
Pride Park, Saturday 29th September 2001
FA Barclaycard Premiership
Thierry Henry responded to his critics with 2 goals
as Arsenal eased past Derby today.
The first was a great free-kick on 20 minutes after
fellow starting-striker Jeffers was held in the box.
The second came from the spot in the second half after
the County keeper Andy Oakes was ruled to have brought
Kanu down in the box. Oakes claimed that Kanu knocked the
ball out of his hands but Henry fired a low penalty past him.
This came a few minutes after Keown's second yellow card,
on the hour. He brought Christie down as he was running into
the box. Although there was another defender close enough for
Martin not to be shown a straight red, no-one else was going to stop
a shot coming in if he hadn't challenged. His first bookng
had however been completely needless, pushing a player after the whistle. Arsenal are protesting his innocence but Derby
will probably feel that they were more hard done-by by the
ref, since they weren't too happy about the free-kick that led
to the first goal. If anything, Arsenal dominated the game even
more once we were outnumbered.
Looks like events are conspiring to give Matty Upson more
chances in the first team. And as against Panathinaikos, that's
looking no bad thing.
Richard Wright had a fine debut, looking generally solid and
pulling off a couple of good saves.

Meanwhile, spare a thought for Tottenham fans, who must have
been feeling pretty good at half-time. Trust them to give
Man United their first away win, even after being given a
3 goal start. Arsenal go top of the table, with Leeds visitng Ipswich tomorrow.
