Saints preview: Sol + Matty by Rupe

We've still got a good few missing in defence. In fact it's likely to be the first time for 16 years that we start a game with none of the "big 6" (Seaman, Adams, Bould, Winterburn, Keown, Dixon).

Adams and Dixon will be out for some time following their operations, Keown is suspended, and Seaman's shoulder (which kept him out of the England game) may see him rested to givehim the best possible chance of making the crucial European match on Tuesday. Oh yeah, and Nutty and Uncle Bouldy have been sold, in case you hadn't noticed.

So it looks like a back 5 of Wright, Lauren, Upson, Cole, and either Grimandi or Campbell (who has been training again following his hamstring problem, but might be rested a little longer). I guess we can't completely rule out Stepanovs in that slot, although Luzhny picked up an ankle problem in the Ukraine match (and of course we want him to be fully fit for the play-offs against Germany!). There are reports coming out now that Campbell will start. "Campbell and Upson": we could be hearing that for some years to come (and in association with Wright, Cole, and Lauren.... is this the famous 5 of the future?)

Up front Dennis Bergkamp's ankle is improving well, but he may also not be risked, with Tuesday in mind (previous item has details and comment). We don't know yet what state Francis Jeffers' ankle is in, so we have to rate him as doubtful since he pulled out of the England U21 squad.

Southampton have a few doubtful: Tahar El Khalej, Rory Delap, Anders Svensson, Kevin Davies. Francis Benali is injured. Jason Dodds returns, not fully match fit.

Our preview page has more details, head-to-head stats, previous meetings, Saints links, international TV coverage info, etc.
