Barthez the hero as Arsenal wallop United by Rupe

Arsenal (0) 3 - 1 (1) Manchester United

Sorry for the delay, took me a while to stop laughing....

Ok, it's there now. See reports page for detailed report, and our list of links to reports on other sites.

In brief: yes Barthez was our hero. But hopefully he's theirs too. Many thanks to several readers who've emailed me to point out that on the official Man Utd website, Barthez is currently streets ahead in their player of the match poll. Arsenal fans taking the piss, or Man Utd fans in a display of forgiveness and recognition of his overall good play? Because, to be fair to him, the France keeper had a very very good game. Up to a point. The point, that is, when he gave us the game.

But Arsenal deserved it. Boy how we deserved it.

Barthez could be in trouble with the authorities after being caught on camera showing 2 fingers to the Arsenal fans. To be fair to the Man Utd keeper, he was the subject of much cruel (and thoroughly enjoyable) taunting. We haven't like it when Arsenal players have been subject to over-the-top punishments for similar actions, and we won't support action against Barthez for this one.

After his second howler gifted Henry his second goal, the one which made the 3 points safe, Barthez howled in pain as he aelf-administered a swift wedgie. Alex Ferguson may consider this insufficient punishment. To be fair to the Man Utd manager, he was quick to admit afterwards that the errors only gace us a win which was deserved. He described it as the best Arsenal performance he's faced ain his time at the Old Trafford helm.

The question we have to ask ourselves, once we've calmed down, is if Arsenal can play like that against a team like Man United, how come we can lose so easily to a team like Charlton? (no offence). Maybe we will, from now on.

One thing's for sure, Juventus won't be looking forward to their visit so much any more. And personally, I'm looking forward to it a bit more.
