Ipswich (0) 0 - 2 (1) Arsenal
Portman Rd, Saturday 1st December 2001
FA Barclaycard Premiership
Good to see Le Boss doing the rigth thing by the team
that beat Mabn Utd so deservedly last Sunday. Today's starting line-up was unchanged from that win.
Arsenal took the lead after just 4 minutes when
Freddie Ljungberg made a good run to latch onto Henry's
pass, after an error by Titus Bramble.Easy goal for
Freddie.
10 minutes into the second half Ljungberg made a crucial
play, clearing off the line when Hrediarsson was allowed a
free header from 8 yards out.
Minutes later, Freddie won a penalty up the other end
when Mark Venus pushed him to the ground. Venus was lucky
to only be shown yellow. Thierry Henry stepped up to put
the spot kick away.
We should have had more. Kanu went on a great run half an hour into
the game but went for goal instead of giving the pass which
would have given Pires a clear chance, and the shot went over.
Kanu had another chance in the second half when a nice ball from
Pires put him through, but he sliced his drive wide. Just before
that the Migerian had been caught offside when Ljungber and Henry
combined to set him up.
Ipswich put in a few good crosses (Cole and Lauren both failing to
prevent them) and had a couple of chances, including a header which Clapham
bottled over thanks to Lauren's presence, and another too-high header
from Clapham whose jump beat Ashley Cole a bit too easily.
Taylor made a save from Hreidarsson in the dying minutes. He had a
couple of jittery moments earlier but the defence covered. Parlour popped
up crucially one time to clear after the keeper dropped the ball.
But let's face it, Seaman usually has one such moment these days, and
Wright's dodgy moments tend to concede goals. Carry on, Stuart.
Not a vintage performance from Arsenal, with Ipswich finishing a bit
stronger. But particularly good stuff from Ray Parlour and, of course,
Freddie Ljungberg. Watch out for this fella, England!
