Class tells as comeback takes Arsenal top by Rupe

Arsenal (0) 2 - 1 (1) Middlesbrough
Highbury, Saturday 29th December 2001
FA Barclaycard Premiership

Once again a dominant Arsenal went in trailing at half time. Boro may have had more than 1 shot on target but I don't remember them right now. And the one that went in was very much down to an Arsenal error.

Boro's main tactic was the hopeful ball forward when they managed to get the ball off of us. It never looked that dangerous a tactic, and Sol Campbell didn't seem to be in much trouble on 22 minutes as he chased the ball back towards Stuart Taylor from the halfway line.

Maybe he didn't get a shout, didn't know that Noel Whelan was on his shoulder. But Sol's a big enough guy not to be lookign for excuses. His first touch was weak and Whelan nipped in front. To be fair to the striker, he finished well from just inside the box, giving Taylor no chance.

Pires equalised after an hour, with a glorious dipping volley which slipped under Mark Crossley's bar from the edge of the D.

And Ashley Cole took us clear with 10 minutes to go. He popped up on the left hand side of the box to place a standing header inside the far post. There was no disrespect to Ashley in the fact that it was Bergkamp's name that the crowd sang afterwards. Dennis had come off the bench a little earlier, replacing Kanu, and it was his perfect floating cross which made the job relatively easy for Cole.

More to follow.

Thanks go to Chelsea for the win at St James's which sees Arsenal overtake Newcastle on goal difference at the top of the table. Liverpool still have a game in hand, and are 2 points behind after a late equaliser at West Ham today.

One complaint: we hardly ever seem to get any goals at the Clock End these days (even for the opposition!)
