Many thanks to Julian Shulman for pointing out that
yesterday was what he calls "St Totteringham's Day".
This worthy but seldom-celebrated festival marks the
day of the year when Tottenham Hotspur can no longer
catch Arsenal in the league table.
Following their valiant but sadly unsuccessful attempt
at a 4th successive 4-0 loss last night, Spurs now have 38 points
and 8 matches remaining, giving them a possible combined total
of 62 points (now now, don't laugh). This of course depends on them winning all their remaining games (I said don't laugh). Arsenal already have 63.
So, everyone with a Tottenham-supporting mate who insists on
going through the annual humiliation of a "we'll finish higher than you" bet.... you can now collect.
Julian asks, "Is it just me? Or, like Christmas, does St Totteringham's day come round earlier every year...?
Rupe adds... Nick writes in to point out that Arsenal have 38 points so far from away games only. He asks if it would be
funny if Arsenal were to end up with more points away from hoem than Tottenham get over the whole season. No Nick, not funny at all.
