Manchester Utd (0) 0 - 1 (0) Arsenal
Old Trafford, Wednesday 8th May 2002
FA Barclaycard Premiership
It's hard to find enough superlatives for this
so I won't even try.
I must admit I wasn't optimistic about this game,
I just thought that the absence of Henry and
Bergkamp would limit our goal threat against
a United team that have played in so many big
games over the years.
But when the United team was announced, missing
Ruud van Nistelrooy, things started looking a
whole lot better. Henry and Dennis were injured,
I haven't heard yet that van Nistelrooy was. He was
fit enough for the bench, but F**kuson chose to
play a striker who's (still) not scored for them,
instead of the scoring sensation of the season.
Maybe the stories of him losing the plot are true.
Although United dominated the first half in terms
of possession, they never looked much like breaking
through. But they looked like breaking an Arsenal leg or two,
and Keane and Neville were both booked for the sort of
fouls which would probably have got an Arsenal player
sent off.
Having weathered that storm,
Arsenal came out more in the second half, and the 57th minute goal
came thanks to two players that are owed a lot this season.
Hopefully Wiltord's goal will finally silence his critics.
But the goal was made by Ljungberg, as much over the last
few weeks as through his contribution last night.
Wiltord approached the box down the middle, with 2 defenders
in front of him, and slipped the ball forward into the right hand
side of the box for Freddie. Such is the fear generated by
the hero of the month that all the defenders went to him,
so that when Barthez parried his shot Wiltord was unmarked
on the far side and kept his cool to put the ball past the
recovering keeper.
Arsenal completed the season's away schedule without losing,
a feat never before completed (ok there was that PNE team but
they only played half as many!). But let's not forget that there's another game to come. We'll
talk more about record-breaking after that!
