Instead, West Ham fought well and deserved the point. After the guests impressed early in the game, the Hammers took over and had a deserved lead after the first half. A second goal could have ended Arsenal's hopes, but instead it added more resolve to the away team. Thierry Henry drew one back with an incredible turn and shot, hammering (!) the ball in the top corner from 20 yards. Later, David Seaman saved a disputable penalty from Frederic Kanouté. In the final 30 minutes, there was no doubt that Arsenal were the better team, and Sylvain Wiltord finally made it count just two minutes from time. Henry and Kolo Touré could both have got deciding goals in injury time. Arsenal started with the same crew as in the Birmingham game, but Dennis Bergkamp was replaced by Kanu at half time. Jermaine Pennant got the final 30 minutes or so instead of Ray Parlour, while Touré again impressed after coming on for Lauren. |
