Arsenal (2) 2 - 1 (1) Man City
Tuesday 10th September 2002
FA Barclaycard Premiership
Arsenal move top of the league, at least for a day, after this hard fought win over Premiership new boys Manchester City. We also equalled the record of scoring in consecutive top-flight matches (44).
As expected, Keegan's team came at us, and if Arsenal had
committed the defensive sins we did against West Brom, things could have been quite different.
Wiltord opened the scoring on 26 minutes, beating the offside trap from just inside their half to latch onto a diagonal ball
before coolly side-footing past Schmeichel.
3 minutes later Keown lost track of a diagonal punt into the box. It just cleared Martin's head, surprising Seaman and leaving him stranded as Anelka got in front of Luzhny to
nod the ball inside the far post.
Just before half time Henry finished off a great move for the winner. Ashley Cole set him up with a cut-back from inside the box
on the left, and Thierry took his time to make sure of beating
Schmeichel with a low curler.
Arsenal had the upper hand a bit more in the second half, but there were still chances at both ends. Henry had one disallowed for offside - it looked a very tight decision to me, and he may even have been behind the ball when Bergkamp flicked it through. But the linesman's flag did go up pretty quickly.
Anelka got some boos. To be honest it probably spurred him on
and seemed counterproductive. He was easily their biggest threat.
Winding Schmeichel up was more fun... two incidents in particular. After City had kicked the ball out to allow treatment for Cole, Henry took the throw in and kicked it out for a City goal kick near the corner flag. Instead of returning it to the keeper, the ball-boy who retrieved the ball just came onto the pitch a yard and plonked it down on the ground so Schmeichel had to come and get it. One can only hope that
the glare he got from Schmeichel was compensated for by the
many ballboy chants which followed from the Clock End.
And towards the end, one of the biggest cheers of the night came
when late sub Kolo Toure (another impressively energetic performance from him) sent the City keeper flying with a
(presumably) accidental collision.
To be fair, Schmeichel like Anelka had a pretty good game. Full credit to Man City generally in fact, for playing a full part in an entertaining and attacking game. Many Arsenal fans
were singing the "you'll never play here again" song without, it seemed to me, thinking about what they were saying. Man City will not go down this season. They'll score too many goals for that. And good luck to them.
Near the end Benarbia got himself sent off. It was up the other
end and I honestly didn't see anything deserving of a second yellow card. Did he say something to the linesman? If so it was the wrong one. The one on the other side of the pitch was the one who didn't seem like he'd ever done it before.
Finally, can it really be true that Luzhny is the best
cover we have for Lauren? The Moose seemed more clumsy
than ever. Do we not have a young right back at the club?
