Charlton Athletic (0) 0 - 3 (1) Arsenal
The Valley, Saturday 14th September 2002
FA Barclaycard Premiership
Another easy win for Arsenal, the plaudits and the record keep
rolling in. This match made it 45 consecutive games in which Arsenal have scored. 2 more, and we'll have the all-time English record (this one set the top-flight English record).
The run of 27 unbeaten league games is also a club record.
Wiltord had already forced Kiely into a great save with a stunning narrow-angle volley, when Henry opened the scoring.
Set up by Bergkamp and Vieira (strangely, for one so tired, popping up absolutely everywhere on the pitch), he hit a bullet of
low first-time shot from the edge of the box which curled
just inside the post leaving the keeper no chance.
Edu and Vieira created one for Wiltord in the second half
(seven goals in seven games - anyone doubt he's a goalscorer
now?) and in the dying minutes Edu popped up in the box to get onto a Henry
cross from the left wing and loop a header over Kiely.
There was still time for Edu to get the ball in the net again but it was ruled out (not sure why).
The one negative thing to come from the game was an incident
highlighted on telly where Henry appeared to elbow someone. It did look a bit dodgy on the replay. The FA may feel compelled to act, but the media seem to be distracted by the fantastic form
and apparent invicinbility of this Arsenal team. They've also
got a very similar incident from the Leeds-ManU game to occupy them, this one involving Beckham and Bowyer.
If things continue like this, we'll be setting domestic records
every week. Let's not forget that it's bound to end someday,
and focus on enjoying it while it lasts.
We can put these things out of our heads for a week now anyway.
Tuesday's home game against Borussia Dortmund may give an indication as to whether, for once, Arsenal's domestic form can be translated into European success.
Dortmund have been preparing for the trip with a couple of
disappointing draws (see Sporting Life).
