Manchester United (1) 2 - 0 (0) Arsenal
Old Trafford, Saturday 7th December 2002
FA Carling Premiership
No disgrace in losing to United at Old Trafford. Not as bad as losing at home to them and then away to Charlton for example. Boy,
has the scousers' bubble burst! United have been
looking quite good again recently and will surely be our
challengers for the title. But Arsenal stay top of the league.
I have to admit I didn't see the match and have only seen the goals on telly so far. The first was a low cross converted by Veron. There has been much moaning about a handball from Ruud van Nistelrooy in the build-up (one which he has admitted, saying
the ref must have judged it to be accidental). But it's easy to
see how the ref might not have seen it (his arm was close to his body) or might have misjudged it. A case of swings and roundabouts methinks: Arsenal have had their fair share of such things going our way too.
We need to focus more on what we can or could have done about it. The defending was not good. Keown may have allowed himself to be distracted by the handball. And if we'd scored one
ourselves before Scholes's well-struck (but deflected) second goal things probably would have been different.
Before they got their first, Thierry Henry missed a decent chance when put through clear on Barthez. His early shot was
untypically soft and straight at the keeper. And shortly after,
Pires nearly finished off a goal-of-the-season move with a chip
which Barthez did brilliantly to touch round the post for a goal-kick (!).
Rami Shaaban injured himself while taking a goal-kick towards
the end of the first half and was replaced by Stuart Taylor. But Dave Seaman should be back for the Valencia game on Tuesday.
At least it was Man Utd that finally stopped us scoring.
Incidentally, anyone know what the record for consecutive home games scored in is, now that the all games and away games record-breaking runs are over...?
(see Record-breakers page).
There is some talk of the possibility of Martin Keown being
charged over an incident involving van Nistelrooy. Apparently
Martin shoved Ruud in the face cos Ruud was standing on his foot.
What the hell else is he going to stand on? Oh right, standing on Martin's foot, I get it....
