Many of us will be a bit nervous going into this week. Last season things were going well until an international break after 9 games, the season went off the rails a bit as soon as the players came back. Anything but a convincing win will be disappointing against Portsmouth (especially with them having both Sherwood and Sheringham!), and any loss of confidence going into the games against Inter and Man United could be fatal.
Gilberto is to be rested for the Pompey game, because he played for Brazil on Wednesday and has only just got back. But apart from that, and Philippe Senderos's back injury (which will keep him out for another 4 to 6 weeks), Arsenal have a full squad. Edu or Parlour will probably play in Gilberto's place.
Given that he didn't play in the internationals, it seems a fair bet that Dennis Bergkamp will get to start today, in place of Henry or Wiltord. With the departure of Jeffers, it's about time Aliadiere is given a go. So let's hope we have a comfortable enough time today for him to get some time on the pitch. With Liverpool Newcastle and Chelsea following the Inter and ManU games, this ought to be the easiest game for a while.
Of course, that means we'll probably lose. Harry Redknapp has been saying that Portsmouth will come to attack, and won't play with just one up front. It's a gamble, Harry.
Sherwood has recovered from an ear infection and could make his first start of the season. Jason Roberts could make his debut alongside Sheringham. At the back, Hayden Foxe has overcome a thigh strain and should play.
But Matthew Taylor is out with a long-term heel injury.
