Arsenal (0) 0 - 0 (0) Fulham
Highbury, Sunday 30th November 2003
FA Premiership
Arsenal:
                Lehmann
      Toure Cygan Campbell Cole
Ljungberg (Aliadiere 79) Edu Gilberto (Kanu 67) Pires
             Henry Bergkamp
What an extraordinarily frustrating game, but perhaps not so surprising. It's been clear for some time that we find it a lot harder at home, when teams come and pack the defence and midfield, when they don't try to win the game. Arsenal's passing and movement is lethal when there's space to use it, but we are to some extent a one trick pony (one hell of a trick, mind).

Beating Inter 5-1 does not make any other game easy. Sure, if we play like that, but who's gonna let us play like that, given a choice? Lokomotiv won't, that's for sure.

As it happens, what was frustrating about today was the fact that despite Fulham's lack of adventure (till the last 15 minutes or so) we made a load of decent chances. A few times the finishing was poor, but more often than that it was the superb goalkeeping of Edwin van der Sar that kept it goal-less.

A few highlights:

5 mins: Henry wins a free-kick with a solo run on the left, Dennis puts just too high for Henry to connect beyond the far post

13 mins: Freddie intercepts near the centre circle, brings it forward and forces a decent save from outside the box.

16 mins: more great Henry running wins a corner which he puts in forcing a big punch from the keeper. We win it back as they come out, Dennis put s fantastic chip over the top for Freddie to run onto, he stretches to poke it goalwards but the keeper comes out and makes a great point blank save.

20 mins: Pires gets the ball int he net but it's ruled offside. Shame. Great cross from the right and a cute Henry flick-on from the penalty spot to put Bob in.

21 mins: Dennis battles hard to win and keep the ball in midfield, puts Freddie loose down the right. With crowded box in front of him he tries to chip inside far top corner but scoops it high.

23 mins: fantastic combination of Pires and Cole on the left (tortured Volz and Inamoto down that flank all game). Bob slips it through for Cole's run into the box, could have gone for goal but cut it back for Henry instead and he was clsoed down too quick to get a shot away.

28 mins: possibly the best chance. Henry chases a ball to the goal-line (again), beating 2 defenders, and cuts it back for Bob 10 yards out. Bob shoot sfirst time with right foot but got his foot round the ball too much and fires well wide.

30 mins: Fantastic run by Pires from the halfway line, chipping it over a defender on the way (for himself to run onto), squares for Henry who forces a terrific save.

32 mins: Cole squares from the wing, Dennis tees it up just outside the box and forces another great diving save. Van der Sar bounces up quickly to dive on the rebound before Freddie can get there.

33 mins: Henry's curling shot forces another great diving save.

35 mins: more great play from Bob and Ash on the left, Bob dribbled through Volz and squares for Henry. He's closely marked but does brilliantly to control it and get a shot off, which is well saved again.

43 mins: a terrific snap shot from Freddie just outside the box, not that hard but takes the keeper by surprise a bit. He gets over to it just inside his left hand post, gets a hand to it and is a bit lucky when it bounces out of his arms, up into his face, and out for a corner instead of into the net. Edu's corner from the left is flicked on by Henry and just eludes Toure at the far post.

first half injury time: Dennis goes over after contact as he's breaking into the box for a Henry lay-off. Crowd bays for a penalty, ref gives nothing, Bonnissel demands a booking for Bergkamp for diving but, crucially, Dennis had just bounced back up and gone after the ball, he didn't seem to think it was a penalty and never claimed one.

There was more of the same in the second half. My notes are less good (as usual) cos it was up the other end of the pitch! Van der Sar made more great saves from Dennis, Pires, a double save (Dennis then Freddie), and Kanu to name a few. Kanu had come on for Gilberto halfway through the half and looked good. He did squander a couple of half chances by over-playing them, but ha made a couple out of nothing as well.

With 15 to 20 minutes to go Fulham decided to come at us a bit more, and they actually had a couple fo extremely good chances. When Hayles came on he nearly scored with his first touch after a neat chip over the top but he was given (narrowly) offside. Volz broke into the box and Ashley got between him and the ball, good defending but a lot of refs would have given the pen as he did trip Volz. Up the other end Volz got a great block in on Henry. Possibly the clearest chance of the game came when Malbranque was allowed to get to a cross from Saha but headed it a foot wide (with Lehmann beaten).

We got lucky one time near the end when the ref blew for a free kick after Toure had fouled Malbranque on the right wing, but Malbranque had already coem away with the ball and was heading goalwards. That was the end for Mabranque. Shortly after, Hayles squared the ball for him in the box but he was so knackered he could only look on with hands on knees.

With a little more luck and an opposition keeper who wasn't on top form we could have won 10-0 today. Still, it's 2 points dropped and it's another indicator to opposition teams as to how they can get away from Highbury with a point. Very frustrating.

The result ends a sequence of 47 home games in which Arsenal have scored, but we extend the unbeaten Premiership start record to 14 games.

Chelsea take over at the top after a 1-0 home win over Man Utd. See table.
