Arsenal (2) 3 - 0 (0) Wolverhampton Wanderers
Highbury, Friday 26th December 2003
FA Premiership
Arsenal:
                     Lehmann
            Toure Cygan Campbell Clichy
Ljungberg (Edue 71) Parlour Vieira Pires (Aliadiere 71)
                 Henry Bergkamp
A nice convincing win. Fewer chances created than against Fulham, for instance, but that's fine so long as some of them are put away.

Wenger stuck with the back 4 from the previous game, with Clichy at left back and Toure on the right. Cygan had a few trademark dodgy moments, perhaps signalling that it's time to bring Toure back into the middle. Wenger did say that Lauren would play in either this match or the next.

Pascal had one of those dodgy moments in the first few minutes, when he played the ball out of defence a little over-confidently. But he got away with it and before long Arsenal were creatign chances. Henryr ran onto a ball over the top and forced a save from Oakes with a difficult volley. Dennis took the corner from our right and in flashed across the face of goal.

Ljungberg received a pass as he came into the box on the right but as he was closed down the ball got away from him a little and he couldn't get any pace on it as he poked a cross across.

Naylor made a great, probably goal-saving tackle on Henry as he broke into the box on the right. Then Clichy stormed down the left wing on the break, and it was testament to his pace that not even Henry kept up with him. He did really well to delay the ball till Henry was on the edge of the box, but the cut-back was intercepted: there were just too many defenders about.

On 13 minutes Ljungberg (I think) won a free-kick just outside the box. Henry forced a diving save, and when the corner from the left was swung in, it was scarmbled home. I thought it was a Vieira goal but it transpired that Paddy had just deflected it onto Jody Craddock who was right next to him, and it went in off the Wolves man for an own goal.

A few minutes later, Clichy put over a great cross for Freddie, but he headed it wide. Then Wolves had a rare attack when Parlour's loose ball in midfield was picked up by Camara. He ran from the halfway line down their right wing, but the eventual cross was cut out superbly by Campbell's stretch.

Then Craddock was responsible for another Arsenal goal (and this time he could be blamed, he didn't know anything about the first one). He had the ball halfway into their half on our left, in plenty of space, but Vieira stormed up behind and robbed the ball off him, then carried it right up to the 6 yard box. Oakes came across to cover that side of the goal and Paddy did well to hold it up and slip it back to Henry a few yards out. He slipped as he pulled the trigger but it didn't make any difference.

Craddock made partial amends minutes later with a big tackle on Henry after Freddie had put him clear.

Henry hit a free-kick from 30 yards which was deflected onto the post and out. Then Toure made one of his colossal runs and looked to be held back a bit as he got into the box. But perhaps he just left too much space between himself and the ball.

Miller was put through at the other end. He beat Cygan but Lehmann came out smartly to save near the edge of his box.

Parlour hit a strong drive from distance that forced another save from Oakes. Then Bergkamp brought the ball into the box on the left and should have done better. He shaped to cross but Oakes didn't buy it and when Dennis tried the near post shot anyway Oakes was right there.

I think it was Craddock again who wasted Wolves' best chance with a minute of the first half to go, which he sliced high and wide.

10 minutes into the second half we had a good break with first Toure and then Bergkamp skipping over a succession of tackles. Denni spassed it back to Toure wide on the right but his cross was blocked.

Then Dennis combined with Henry on the other side of the pitch. This time it came back to Den in the D. With back to goal he spun round and shot in one movement and almost put enough curl on to bring the ball back inside the right hand post.

Campbell had a couple of chances which he blasted over. Halfway through the half, Edue came on for Pires and Aliadiere for Freddie (with Dennis moving to Freddie's place on the right). Vieira got himself booked for (apparently) not giving the ball back at a Wolves free-kick.

Dennis forced another decent save after beign set up by Aliadiere. Then with a minute to go Henry got the 3rd. He received a great pass ball from Edu, on the edge of the box on the left. He bamboozled poor Luzhny going one way then the other (without going anywhere, if you see what I mean). The second time he shaped to go outside the former Gunner, he did, and made space for a narrow angled shot which he placed just beyond Oakes's left hand and inside the far post.

There was still time for an amusing cameo from Wolves sub Dean Sturridge. A cross came over from their left wing and Sturridge rose in front of goal to head it from about 8 yards out, but only managed to head it back the way it came, almost to the guy who'd crossed it.

Man Utd beat Everton today, but Chelsea slipped up to a convinci ng win by Charlton. See table.
