A bit controversial, this one. Fulham held us out for an hour,
and in the first half could have had a penalty and another goal.
Should have, to a Fulham fan.
Ref Mark Halsey awarded a penalty to the home side on 35 minutes after Ashley Cole appeared to bring down Andy Cole. But after consulting the linesman Halsey changed his mind. After the game he said, "I explained it to Andy Cole and he fully accepted my explanation that at the end of the day we got it right." Not sure that Cole's version of events would support that 100%. Fulham keeper Edwin van der Saar said he found it "very strange" but did concede that if the ref was at the wrong angle, the linesman's view can be crucial. So, not so strange after all, then? What is odd is that if that was the situation, if the ref's view wasn't ideal, why did he award the penalty? Why did he not ask his linesman first? Fulham boss Chris Coleman said it was an "inept decision", adding, "he was crap".
5 minutes after that, Collins John was celebrating getting the ball in the net from a header, only to discover that Halsey had disallowed it. Replays suggested that Halsey was probably right, John being more the pusher than the pushed (as he claimed).
Arsenal had started well. Freddie was put clear almost from the off, but got the ball tangled in his feet. Then he was in action up the other end clearing a header by Zat Knight. And midway through the half it was Freddie again, forcing a save from van der Saar after Henry had put him clear.
But then Boa Morte took control for a few minutes, using his speed to get to the goal line and put in crosses that caused us a bit of panic. The first controversial penalty decision followed, and then one that went their way as former Gunner Moritz Volz appeared to foul Henry in the box. Collins Johns' disallowed goal took the game to half time.
Fulham started the second half well too. Collins John volleyed wide from Papa Dioup's lob, and then prodded the ball against Lehmann's legs after Andy Cole put him through. From this latter attempt the ball ricocheted out to Pembridge whose shot was deflected wide by Vieira. Cygan had to smother a shot from Cole.
Arsenal responded eventually, with Henry going close from a narrow angle. Then Reyes came on for Pires and on 62 minutes he combined with Cole and Henry down the left to create the first goal for Freddie.
Just 3 minutes later we were 2 up. A great pass from Bergkamp
found Freddie on the 6 yard line and defender Zat Knight prodded the ball past van der Saar as he tried to dispossess the Swede.
And just a few minutes later it was 3. Bergkamp again the provider, this time for Reyes with a well timed run and cool finish.
So, a typical 10 minute salvo from Arsenal, and a scoreline that keeps the seasonal stats looking healthy to the point of absurdity. But Fulham deserved more. They nearly got a consolation at the end as Andy Cole forced another save from Lehmann, but it wasn't to be. Arsenal go clear in the table, with Chelsea only managing a draw at Villa. 5 wins out of 5, and Reyes has scored in them all. The Premiership goalscorers table in looking very nice too, with Reyes and Henry clear first and second on 5 and 4 respectively, and 2 Arsenal players (Dennis and Bobby) in the large pack who are joint thrid on 3 goals. |
