Arsenal will be without Sol Campbell and, more significantly, Cesc Fabregas for the
visit of West Brom tomorrow. What's most significant is that Cesc's foot injury will
see him missing the first leg of the Champs League semi-final against
Villareal on Wednesday.
Sol's injury has been confirmed as a broken nose, which was already as plain as the nose on his face
to anyone who saw it squashed sideways as he left the pitch towards the end of the
draw at Pompey on
Wednesday. He has had surgery, which means at least a week out, but could be
back next weekend for the visit of his former club Tottenham. Arsene Wenger remains
convinced that Sol can make it into England's World Cup squad.
The Arsenal manager has confirmed that Thierry Henry has had enough of a rest, and
will be playing against the Baggies tomorrow. Ashley Cole is still on schedule for
a return to full training next week, and could return to the first team for
the Sunderland game on May 1st. Wenger has also
commented on Theo Walcott's long wait for a game. The 17 year old
won;t be on the bench tomorrow, but will be in the squad for Wednesday when
UEFA rules allow for more players to be available as subs. "I must say I am impressed
by him in training," says Le Boss, "If there is a problem at the World
Cup tell Sven to call me. I may have a good striker for him." A little
disingenuous, there. Sven can't possibly pick a player who's not
playing first team football. But it's promising for next season.
Gilberto is bound to return, probably with Abou Diaby alongside him,
as surely is Emmanuel Eboue. The latter would give Wenger another option
at centreback: he could give Kolo Toure a rest and unite the Swiss
pairing of Philippe Senderos and Johan Djourou in the middle.
West Brom have no new injury worries. Keeper Chris Kirkland's finger injury has now
led to him ending his loan spell at the club, however, so
Tomasz Kuszczak is expected to continue between their sticks.
Defensively, the Baggies have been struggling for a stable back line.
Steve Watson is likely to be at right back with Paul Robinson on the left,
and Neil Clement partnering alleged Arsenal target Curtis Davies at centre back.
But Martin Albrechten and Williams Martinez are possibilities too.
They have no injuries in midfield, where Ronnie Wallwork is likely to start
before taking an enforced rest (2 match ban). Nigel Quashie is back from a 5
match ban. Jonathan Greening has competition for the left midfield slot
from Diomansy Kamara. Other possible starters include former Gunner
Junichi Inamoto, Zoltan Gera, Jan Kozak and Andy Johnson.
Up front Bryan 'man of the match' Robson has fewer options, with only
Nathan Ellington as competition for 2 more former Arsenal men in
Kanu and Kevin_Campbell. It'd be interesting to see Kanu and
Emmanuel Adebayor playing at the same time, and I'm expecting the
latter to start since he's cup-tied for the midweek match. Let's hope
he gets the chances that allow him to score the goals to get him,
and the Arsenal faithful, to forget his misses on Wednesday. |
