Liverpool's loss at Newcastle today, from being a goal up, once again
gives Arsenal the chance to catch up (see table).
If we can beat Wigan Athletic
tomorrow afternoon we'll be one point behind the scousers with a game in
hand.
Not that we should be complacent. Last week we failed to take advantage
of their draw, not that our 10 man
draw at Boro was too disappointing in the circumstances. And Wigan are
hovering just above the drop zone so potentially a harder task than
a mid-table team with less to play for. Wigan have a couple of games
in hand over their rivals down there so if they can get anything
from us it'll help secure them as favourites to stay up. And that's despite a run of
8 league losses in a row (starting with our win at the JJB),
only stopped by the 1-0 home win against Portsmouth last
weekend.
The squad is boosted by the return of Julio Baptista and Abou Diaby.
There's a good chance that both will make it to the bench, especially
the Beast. With Robin van Persie still out Baptista, Jeremie Aliadiere,
and Theo Walcott are the striking options after Thierry Henry and
Emmanuel Adebayor who we'd expect to start up front.
Walcott may start too, on the right, since Alexander Hleb and
Freddie Ljungberg are injured. Matthieu Flamini was used there
last weekend at Boro but Arsene Wenger may decide to go for a
more attacking line-up at home to Wigan. Tomas Rosicky, Cesc Fabregas,
and Tomas Rosicky should complete the midfield. If Walcott (or someone else,
like Denilson, Diaby, or Aliadiere) starts on the right then
Flamini is likely to be on the bench.
Philippe Senderos is suspended because of last weekend's red card,
but Johan Djourou is available to come in alongside Kolo Toure.
Justin Hoyte should continue at right back with Emmanuel Eboue still injured
along with William Gallas.
Hleb and Freddie are expected back in training next week.
Wigan have Emile Heskey and Leighton Baines back from calf injuries
which kept them out of Pompey game. If Heskey scores it'll be his
100th league goal.
Keeper Chris Kirkland missed the England game with a shoulder problem but
is expected to be ok for tomorrow.
