As predicted, Nicolas Anelka has remained in Spain while his
Real Madrid team-mates travelled to London for tonights Lee
Dixon testimonial match. Anelka is injured, and must be gutted by this. There can be no question that a man of his integrity and courage would have wanted to be at Highbury to support a former
colleague if it had been at all possible (despite what I may have said earlier).
Sadly Arsenal's England players will also be missing the match,
and Dixon has said that with the crunch matches against Scotland
coming up he wouldn't want it on his shoulders if the likes of
Adams or Keown got injured in his friendly.
But it should still be a good night, and for a good cause.
The Arsenal-Real match will be preceded by an "England-Scotland
legends" match featuring the likes of Hoddle, Waddle, Beardsley, and Strachan.
See our match preview page for
more.
