Although we've seen nothing from Arsenal about it yet, reports
from Ajax say that we'll be taking part in a 4-way
tournament in Amsterdam this August.
It's part of Ajax's centenary celebrations, which began
on Saturday when the Amsterdam club played their home game
against FC Twente wearing old-style kit (long baggy shorts, numbers from 1 to 11,
button-collared shirts with no sponsorship, etc). See
this
report from the official Ajax site (and click on the
"Fotoverslag" links at the bottom for more pictures). Seems like
their movement might have been restricted a bit though - Ajax lost 1-0.
There will be all sorts of stuff going on throughout the year,
including a friendly between Ajax and Panathinaikos, re-creating
Ajax's first European Cup win in 1971 (at Wembley - the original not the re-creation) and featuring some of the players from
that game (eg Cruyff, Neeskens).
Anyway, what you want to hear about is the summer tournament....
It's scheduled for August 3rd to 5th, and will feature a pretty
impressive line-up: Ajax, Arsenal, Barcelona, Lazio.
The other 3 clubs could put together a pretty impressive
"ex-Ajax" team (and I say that without knowing if Lazio have
any!).
Thanks to Nel and Alan for the following translation of the bit about the tournament from
this page.
"The main force of Ajax plays the traditional
jubilee competition on 3 to 5 August. Especially for this celebration period, the clubs are of
international top level this time. The selections of Ajax, Barcelona, Lazio
Roma and Arsenal are competing in a competition that as far as football
quality is equal to Euro 2000."
Hmm, a conservative forecast I reckon. Just have to hope that the lads get
enough rest. At least we won't be in the charity shield this year
(no, I'm not really glad).
The page goes on to say that Ajax season ticket holders will get
first shot at tickets for the tournament, following which there
will be a general sale. There will also presumably be some on sdale through the Arsenal. We will of course let you know as soon as
we hear more.
