Arsene Wenger was one of 11 coaches who met at UEFA's Elite Coaches Forum yesterday (30 Aug) to talk about football and other matters. The meeting appears to have concentrated on the current crisis in the transfer market, but also came up with a couple of other conclusions which may not get much coverage. In particular:
- the proposal to allow 11 substitutes on the bench for matches in UEFA competitions;
- to allow four (outfield) subtitutions per game, plus a possible change of goalkeeper - on condition that one of the substitutions must happen at halftime (sounds like a nightmare to us!);
- support for a unified international calendar, to avoid the loss of players to international duty; and
- 'the coaches could find no sensible reason for taking part in a World Championship for clubs'. Sour grapes from the European contingent after Brazil, perhaps?
Of course, these suggestions are a long way away from coming into force... but it's interesting to see the train of thought being adopted by the game's great and good.
