Despite my having forgotten to plug the show and get a few more Gooners along (sorry), Alan Davies has kindly provided the following report from Radio 5 Live's "Any Sporting Questions", which went out live on Monday night.
The show came from Barnet's Underhill stadium and the panel included David Dein and Gary Mabbutt (as well as Alan himself).
Alan writes:
"David Dein was there but there's not a great deal to report. He was asked about AW & DB's contracts but gave nothing away as you'd expect."
"The Champions League came in 4 some stick. David said that 1 group stage followed by a straight knockout in the last 16 might be preferable to the current arrangement. Made total sense to me. Dropping teams into the UEFA Cup was thought to be a crap idea all round, though David didn't comment on it."
"Gary Mabbutt made the valid point that the domestic cup competitions & to an extent the league had been adversely affected by the CL. Barnet fans obviously agreed but who wouldn't? Sending reserve teams into the League Cup really
annoys people it seems & the CL's absurd fixture list was held
responsible, though AW was doing it before we were in the CL..."
"On the subject of the new ground, David said Ken Friar, despite his supposed retirement, is working full-time to make it happen. We now have 20,000 people on the season ticket waiting list. No-one said we should stay at Highbury."
"Lots of Spurs fans in the place & the general discontent with Gorgeous George is continuing to grow. The Ginola transfer has really got their goat, not to mention the dire football they're playing. Got the impression from Richard Littlejohn that the fans are enduring a painful time.... he actually said 'The way I look at it is I'll be there long after he's gone'."
"The change in the back-pass law was the end of George,it was certainly the day our football came out of the dark ages eh?"
Many thanks to Alan for the report. It's particularly good to hear that Ken Friar is still heavily involved at the club. It was
clear from this summer's end of season video that his influence would be missed, particularly with regard to the new stadium plans.
