Arsenal have confirmed the death of George Armstrong, reserve team coach. He passed away at the untimely age of 56 late last night after apparently collapsing during training yesterday, suffering from a brain haemorrhage.
"Geordie" Armstrong was one of the club's all time great players, member of the double winning team in 1971, and is remembered with great awe and affection by supporters from that era. He held Arsenal's appearance record (surpassed only in recent years by O'Leary and Adams), making a total of 621 appearances for the club, scoring 68 goals.
He will no doubt be sorely missed by all at the club, particularly by those younger players who he has nurtured in recent years. Players at tonight's game will wear black armbands and supporters will be asked to observe a period of silence in respect.
See AFCi for the club statement and more biographical details. Sympathies and condolences to George's family and friends, and all at Arsenal Football Club
