It was obvious that one player from Cameroon would be awarded the African Player of the Year trophy after the team won both the African Nations Cup and the gold medal in the Olympics this year. Although being named ANC best player of the tournament, Lauren failed to succeed Kanuuu who won it in '96 and '99 and finished second to Parma' s Patrick M' Boma. Nwankwo is ranked fifth in the competition this year.
