Inevitably we suppose, the acclaimed (and rightly so) official Arsenal website is set to become a profit-driven operation from next season - with the introduction of a new video-driven service under the banner 'Arsenal World Plus'.
For 'less than £1 a week', the club is promising 'unrivalled and exclusive web site content', centred around new video offerings: current and classic Premiership match highlights, interviews and press-conferences, etc etc.
The site's news service - to be called 'Extra Time' or 'Arsenal News, they don't seem sure themselves - will be 'official... exclusive and... online'. And if previous form is a guide, it'll often be days behind Arseweb. (We won't even mention the Jerzy Dudek player profile incident.)
If all this appeals, you're looking at £13 for a 3-month subscription, up to £45 for a full year. Arseweb is inclined to wait a while before reaching for the ole credit card.
But it does suddenly 'up the stakes' in terms of what unofficial websites will be allowed to get away with. If real money is involved, Arseweb imagines the whole online copyright issue will become a lot more serious. That means no more fan sites encoding their own video, and (probably) no more nicking photos from the wire services.
The statement makes no mention of the AFCi dial-up service (which will presumably continue as it's a money-making scheme anyway), or the content which will be free to view on the club site.
