Jeffers and Gio help Arsenal win (updated) by Rupe

Arsenal got off to a good start with their series of pre-season friendlies tonight, with a 2-0 win at Borehamwood.

This report contained a couple of errors before, carried through from this report from Sporting Life (the only source at the time). Many thansk to all the ArseWeb readers who sent in corrections and additions, which you can find on the reports page.

Francis Jeffers got off to a good start, slotting home the first goal (at the second attempt) after just 9 minutes off his first start in an Arsenal shirt.

Campbell couldn't play because of his ankle injury, and Richard Wright hasn't started training yet. But the other big signing Gio van Bronckhorst played well, as did Edu who linked up well with Bergkamp and set up the second for the Dutchman with a great run and long chip towards the end of the first half.

Arsenal started with several first-teamers (Adams, Dixon, Gio van B, Bergkamp, Edu, Grimandi) with all but Gilles coming off at half-time. The youngsters played well but couldn't add to the 2-0 half-time scoreline (despite a dodgy keeper, replacing Andy Goram at half-time), Barrett coming closest with a powerful close range header saved brilliantly.

Gio wore 11, but there were no names on shirts and numbers from 1 to 11 were used. So one shouldn't read anything into that (the official site still shows his number as undecided). We'll also choose to read nothing into the fact that Sidwell wore number 4! (Vieira isn't due back for training till Monday).

Now read the reports (including links to reports on other sites)
