Barnet (0) 1 - 6 (3) Arsenal
Underhill, Saturday 11th August 2001
friendly
Arsenal continued the trend, stepping up another notch with
their final pre-season friendly today. Barnet were treated to
a show featuring virtually every member of the Arsenal first team squad (Dixon and Upson notable absentees), including 11 second half substitutes. Contrary to
some reports before the game, Sol Campbell was not rested to
protect him from Tottenham fans, but played the first 70 minutes.
It took half an hour for Ljungberg to get the first, breaking from midfield and hitting a sweet low shot after trading passes with Parlour.
Shortly after that Cole got the second a right foot blast after a
powerful run from defence. Then Lauren (continuing his run at right back) had a shot come back off the post and Bergkamp's follow-up was blocked.
But Dennis did make it 3 just before the break, following a 1-2 with Jeffers.
Barnet had a goal disallowed, but made up for it with a strong spell at the start of the second half during which
Neil Midgeley got their
consolation goal, taking advantage of a Seaman save which fell to him.
Henry came off the bench to make it 4 from a great pass by
fellow sub Vieira, and then Vieira walloped home a van Bronckhorst corner. Vieira turned provider again towards the end,
Wiltord making it 6.
It looks clear now that Lauren is going to be used as a right back this season. But it's still not clear what the cover is for
Ashley Cole on the other flank. Oleg Luzhny came on for him at half-time today. Given that he's failed to establish himself as
cover for his inbternational position on the right, it would
be something of a surprise to find him favoured on the left.
