In reflecting on differences between English and French football in an interview in The Times, Michel Platini (a.k.a. the French Liam Brady) lets on that he almost made the switch to Highbury in 1982 -- but chose Juventus instead.
"I had long talks about joining Arsenal and I might have signed but for one thing — you play too many games. At Christmas and on week nights English football always seems to have matches, and I like to have some time off to have with my family. I also like my holidays. My wife would have loved to come for the shopping, and I can tell you she likes to shop, but I decided to go to Turin instead."
A year later he was European footballer of the year, and Arsenal fans were suffering, well, the football of 1982-83. Sigh.
