...ok, he didn't exactly say that. But it seems
a valid inference from the "World dream team" which
the England captain has put together (virtually) for a
new computer game (which shall remain nameless lest we are
accused of encouraging people to buy it).
Paddy is the only Arsenal player in Beckham's world XI. The midfield quartet consists of the Arsenal maestro, Figo, Rivaldo, and Beckham himself.
It's rather surprising that Keane doesn't get a look in.
From my mailbox, I'd say that there are quite a few Arsenal fans
who wouldn't be at all sure that they'd pick Vieira ahead of
Keane. Keane certainly stood out in the recent Arsenal-Man Utd match, as just about the only United player to come out of the
game with any credit, he scores more goals than the
frustratingly shot-shy Frenchman, and surely no-one has ever questioned his commitment or attitude (not that I question
Vieira's, but there are plenty that do).
So we hope that Keane will be having a painfully loud word or two in Beckham's ear. Arseweb would pick
Vieira first, of course, but surely Beckham is saying something
here by leaving his club captain out.
What...? stirring...? us??!
What is even more surprising is that Fabien Barthez makes not only Beckham's World XI, but his all-time Man Utd XI as well!!
Barthez the best in the world? Now? Even if this list was compiled before the France keeper's recent howlers, you are surely having a laugh, Mr Posh?!
Better than Schmeichel at his best? Well, that doesn't deserve comment.
But it's nice to see Siralex Ferguson's red nose rubbed in it,
as Jaap Stam makes both squads.
Full Beckham World XI:
Barthez; Thuram, Carlos, Stam, Nesta; Vieira, Beckham, Figo,
Rivaldo; Ronaldo, Owen
(Ronaldo?! have the Mirror dredged this list up from
1998?)
