As Arseweb suggested some time back, the club's new shirt sponsor next year will be O2 - the mobile phone operator formerly known as BT Cellnet.
The Guardian reports that the deal is 'thought to be worth £20m over 4 years', and will be backed up with 'high speed and interactive mobile data and audio services for fans... ringtones, icons and phone messages... exclusive manager and player messages, an Arsenal daily trivia game, priority ticket text service, live match commentary, pre- and post-match audio analysis... exclusive Arsenal mobile phones... and 'regular competitions to win match tickets'. Wow, can't wait.
Sky Sports, meanwhile, says it's for £6-10m for the first two years, with a review to follow.
David Dein tells Arsenal.com 'We are delighted to have signed a record sponsorship deal with O2. Both Arsenal and O2 are leaders in their own fields and, by joining forces, we have created a dynamic new partnership.'
The official site features a pic of the new logo as it sits on the shirt - and, of course, a first glimpse of the new shirt. Arseweb is intrigued by the apparent gills.
This all fits together beautifully. English football's two giants are now sponsored by two giants from the same market (cf. Man Utd and Vodafone) - how long before Orange sponsor Liverpool? O2's new slogan, 'See what you can do', tallies nicely with kit manufacturer Nike's 'Just do it'.
And yes, lest there be any doubt, Arseweb was the first to coin the 'O2 be a Goonah!' joke. We thank you.
