Now and again our friends in the US of A have commentators that sometimes perhaps need a little bit extra knowledge of our game. The following gems were picked up by Arseweb reader Neil Smith of California from the recent away game against Leeds which was shown delayed live on televisions across the pond.
Neil says "The commentator was in fine form mentioning that Arsenal were fielding 10 black players, a new record, only Seaman was white. The director then took great joy in cutting to the shaven sweaty head of Cygan. The commentator decided not to say anything. Earlier he must have misread his teamsheet and
seen Kol O' Toure as he happily told us that Toure was an Irish
international. He did correct himself on that one."
It turns out that the commentators were in fact the English ones but I don't recall hearing such gems or maybe I was still waking up as it was an early kick-off.
Arseweb meanwhile can't wait for Kolo Toure to be picked for Mick McCarthy's Ireland squad as it seems anybody can now play for them. We think they specifically need a new midfielder as replacement for someone else.
A previous Irish gem from Sky Sports was during the Ladies FA Cup Final in 2001 when the commentator asked Hope Powell (England Ladies manager) whether Emma Byrne (Arsenal Ladies Irish international goalkeeper) was featuring in Hope's England European Championship plans.
