See this BBC piece for a great discussion of Sir Alex Ferguson's double standards. It includes a couple of pictures of crowds of Man Utd players resolutely refusing to bully referees... a moral stance for which they are rightly famous, in stark contrast to the Arsenal.
It's very hard to be consistent all the time, and of course our own boss sometimes fails to see incidents where Arsenal players are in the wrong, and you just know that he'd have seen if if things had been the other way round... but as the BBC piece says and shows, Ferguson does seem to have flipped a bit after Saturday's match (see here for report and description of "Fergie's frothing").
As was evidenced by the infamous boot-kicking incident
after Saturday's match. The BBC piece also includes a picture of his stitches. Beckham will be wishing that it was Ryan Giggs that had taken that particular shot! See our list of amusing football injuries for more, including some manager-induced ones.
For people who missed Sky's coverage of the Lucky Leeds win over
Crystal Palace, there was a hilarious bit of punditry from Alan Shearer when discussing Leeds' controversial free-kick. In case you don't know, their first goal came from a decidedly dodgily awarded free-kick, which was taken quickly while Palace were setting up their wall. Shearer said that it was Palace's fault for not putting a man on the ball to prevent the kick being taken quickly. You get a yellow card for it, he said, but it has to be done (and George Graham nodded sagely in the background). Quite right of course, but we can't help wondering if he's discussed it with Bobby Robson and Laurent Robert.
Rupe adds...
Thank you to everyone who's sent us the rumour about the
alleged dressing-room bust-up, which has been causing congestion in cyberspace today. But please, no more! We couldn't
possibly publish something like that. To be frank, I find it all a bit hard to believe. Maybe no more so than the official story, but that doesn't make it true!
Allan adds...
If you're in the market for an out-and-out piece of Ferguson skewering masquerading as journalism (go on, you know you are), have a look at this piece on Soccernet written by what can only be a Man City fan. Either it's hilarious or I was up too late when I read it...
