Monday was the 2nd anniversary of the death of David Rocastle.
See previous articles for more about Rocky and the ways in which Arsenal fans are still honouring his memory.
In particular, this piece includes information about how you can join hundreds of other football fans who are using spare processor power on their computers to help the search for cancer cures, in the
"Rocastle Remembered" United Devices team.
People who already have the UD screensaver installed, as well as new members, should note that the UD set-up has changed a bit
recently. It's now part of Grid.org, and your computer may be used for other projects besides the cancer cure search, unless you take the trouble to change your settings. By default, your
computer will be used for whatever they deem worthwhile. At the moment this includes, as well as the cancer research project, one into smallpox. Thsi latter project is part of an american bioterrorism initiative called "PatriotGrid".
You may feel that this project is as important as the cancer research project, and we would respect that. However the Rocastle Remembered team was set up to aid research into cancer (which took poor Rocky's life), and so for those who wish to restrict the use to which the Grid puts their computer, insctructions follow:
- connect to the internet
- from the UD screen click "View your device list" or "Modify Device Profile" or similar, to get into the UD web pages
- Log in to the UD site, and then click on "My Device Manager"
- Click on "Profiles" and then "Default"
- At the bottom, under "Current Grid Computing Projects", you'll find the list of projects. Uncheck the tick-box next to the PatriotGrid entry, leaving just the tick next to the Cancer Research project
- Click on "Save" to register the change
- Having done this, you might find that you are already running a smallpox task. If you wish, you can "dump" this by from Windows by pressing CTRL, ALT and DELETE and selecting the "Task manager". There should be two programs with UD in their name that you can see running - one
of them includes the batch number of the task you are currently crunching. Highlight the batch numbered task and
click on "End task" then it's dumped and you will get a new task from the server.
Many thanks to Alex Kersley for alerting us to this possibility. |
