UEFA have introduced a "silver goal" rule for the upcoming UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup finals. Instead of the "golden goal", where play is immediately terminated when a goal is scored, a "silver goal" allows play to go on till the end of the half, therefore allowing the opposing team to equalise. Bonkers indeed. Why not scrap it altogether?
Rupe adds...
Bonkers it may be, but the idea was being proposed as far back as August 2001 by the likes of
Arsene Wenger and David Dein, along with other managers and coaches such as Houllier and O'Leary. They were among 12 "elite" coaches who met in Geneva during that close season and agreed unanimously that the golden goal had to be scrapped because it
tended to make both players and referees freeze in extra time due to the fear factor. Wenger was also quoted as saying, "..we believe it is part of the excitement of the game to see how teams react when they go 1-0 down in extra time".
Like Ashburrn, I find it hard to see why they don't just go back to 15 minutes each way. Maybe the powers-that-be don't like to admit to having made a mistake. Anyway, to me "silver" still seems a big improvement on "golden".
Thanks to Ben Pope for reminding us of the stuff from 2 years ago.
